Dreaming One More Time at 75
In 1967 I began reading SELF-HELP and MOTIVATION BOOKS.
Since then up to the early 90s I filled a tall bookcase with such books. They are organized alphabetically by the author's family names.
Here is a sample of the most commonly popular 14 in the past 50+ years

Did reading them truly help me?
Looking back over the past 50 years of my thinking about the great, good, bad, ugly and horrible things that have happened my answer is:
Yes they did.
At least for a short while.
Through my active involvement in the National Speakers Association from 1989 to 2005 I had the opportunity to meet a variety of these type authors including Zig Ziglar and listen often on audio tapes of tv shows to many others including Rev. Robert Schuller. Also I have attended large audience events where Zig Ziglar, Norman Vincent Peale and Jack Canfield were the main stage speakers.
Did watching and listening truly help me?
Yes it did.
At least for a short while.
Funny thing is that I also heard Zig Ziglar say in person when I met him at a NSA convention when he and I had MEET THE PROS tables next to each other in huge ballrooms filled with 150 to 200 different speakers talking with small groups of 8 to 10 NSA members had chosen to sit at their tables from 20 to 40 minutes to LEARN FROM PROS.
Even funnier thing I was considered one of the PROS next to people like Zig Ziglar or Les Brown, who I also met one on one a few times
One lesson I heard from Rev Schuller, Zig and Les was the same.
When asked if motivational speeches or books really help?
They each shared a similar answer.
At least for a short while.
Same result that we get from taking a shower or a bath.
My take away has been that we often need help from friends, families, authors, speakers when our own minds, hearts or souls don't seem to be able to.
This book shares how I have survived or thrived for my entire life no matter what has happened.
I repeat my line from earlier no matter what happened:
GREAT, GOOD, BAD, UGLY or HORRIBLE
Self-reflection began to be a major part of my life in 1967, slowly at first, then in the 80s intensely into the late 90s through the various things that happened in my life and now in 2019 once again when I have fallen into what could be the lowest pit of my life.
My dreams often lead to nightmares.

So they helped but it didn't last. Why not? Was it like going on a diet but not sticking to it? The vow to exercise more that slowly slips away? Or was the advice less helpful than it seemed at first? Did you realize that it was just so much fluff? Was there ANYTHING you got from self-help books and lectures that had permanent value?

positive thinking
positivity thinking
Magic of Your Mind
all need to become part of a life
continual depressive or tragic experiences don't help
Goal Setting
Strategic Planning needs to become a way of life
not just an occasional effort
Vision setting
Mission setting
Goal Setting
Objective Setting
Tasks
Having Passions or a Purpose also help
but them can be lost
None of them are truly QUICK FIXES or PERMANENT.
